TRAINS SHOULD BE USED FOR COMMUTER TRANSPORTATION

In my opinion, pumping Seventy Million Dollars into the economy of Phillipsburg, New Jersey is a great idea. However, I think the New Jersey State financed Train Museum in Phillipsburg, New Jersey needs to be reviewed. In my opinion, turning the town into a giant train amusement park may cause more harm than good.

Two examples of towns that don't benefit from amusement parks in their midst are Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey and The Land of Make Believe in Hope, New Jersey. Besides paying for tickets to get into the complex, tourist rarely frequent the local downtowns where the parks are located.

A far better way to invest Seventy Million Dollars would be to improve the Commuter Train service to Phillipsburg and beyond. Two rails pass through Phillipsburg, New Jersey, (correct me if I'm wrong), one rail goes toward Hackettstown, New Jersey on it's way to New York City, New York. One rail goes toward Somerville, New Jersey on the way to Trenton, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Marketing shows, in towns where commuter trains are a part of the town, if shops are open and the streets are clean, commuters visit the town and spend money.

Every weekday Monday - Friday, a large number of commuters travel from Pennsylvania, East along Route 22-78. Each day thousands of gallons of foreign oil are burned to power the commuter's vehicles. It's difficult to accept the fact that gasoline costs as much as it does but the prices aren't going to drop significantly. We have to do the things necessary to reduce use and reduce pollution. It's just the way things are.

TRAIN MUSEUM PROMOTERS If the rails are improved throughout the network for commuting, on weekends the New Improved rails could be used by tourists riding old trains for excursions throughout the region. Consider the financing of my idea, if train rails are improved for commuter service the source of the money would most likely be from the federal government not New Jersey taxpayers.

Our transportation heritage is strong. Instead of one seventy million dollar Museum in Phillipsburg, why not build three or four ten million dollar museums. Flemington, Phillipsburg, Somerville and Trenton, New Jersey could be linked together with old train excursions. Just like the good old days, isn't that what it's all about? Let's not spend another $300,000. on a study, let's do it!
